Wishful Thinking
There is apparently a very large storm headed this way. I would call it the “Storm of the Century,” but we had that the year before last. I guess we could call it the “Storm of the Decade” since the last big one was in 2009, but this decade is young yet and could still surprise us. Especially since next year is 2012… Anyway, I have visions of nesting here at home...

Oh nothing, just committing career suicide. And...
A couple of weeks ago, our Executive Director announced she was leaving the museum. As second in charge here, I envisioned having to walk some new asshole through the ropes and then watch him or her take over MY beloved institution. So, I applied for the job. The problem is, it’s not so much that I want the job as it is that I don’t want some power-hungry jerk looking to make a name...

When my husband and I talked about a weekend...
I’m pretty sure going to a hotel on Saturday morning with all 5 kids to escape our smoke-filled downstairs was not what we had in mind. But, it’s what we got. And all things considered, I’ll take it.  (The smoke has cleared. The upstairs heater still works, and we are headed home in the morning to prepare for this year’s ‘storm of the century’ which is supposed...

Nine Years Ago...
I gave birth to a baby girl. She was my third child and my second daughter. Because my uterus is apparently lazy, I have always needed a steady IV pitocin drip to stay in active labor. This was never made more evident than during her delivery when I inadvertently knocked my IV out while pushing and completely stalled my labor, full dilation notwithstanding. Then she came so quickly after they...

i can't be the only one that thinks Tobey Maguire...
So that’s why I’ve always found him to be slightly unnerving. (And probably also why I didn’t love the movie version of The Cider House Rules even though John Irving adapted it himself.)

Good Karma?
One of the things I hate most about raising my family in the same place I grew up is that there is the occasional awkward run-in. I once hid in the back of Hastings for 20 minutes with my heart pounding in my ears when I heard my high school ex paged to come to the front. I spotted him again exiting Wal-Mart with my oldest, raced to the parking lot, and made sure not to point him out until he was...

I Think I'm the Last One on Tumblr
To wish Dan and his balls a very Happy Birthday!! (But were his balls not so prolific, I would not have met his wonderful wife on the MSN Infant.Toddler message boards so long ago. So I am quite sincere in my birthday wishes!) I hope it was good one!

You Might Be a Little Too Into Harry Potter If...
You are arguing with your daughter about whether or not “Lumos” would work at all against the Dementors. She is pretty sure that it would be a quick deterrent if an underage wizard couldn’t manage the “Expecto Patronum” spell. I told her that if it worked at all, they would have taught it to Harry and that she should stick with “Expecto Patronem,” but what...

So, I Posted My Senior Pic to my Facebook profile
And now my high school crush and I are chatting back and forth about it. He’s very openly gay these days, but I’m swooning just a little bit anyway.

To My Daughter's Teacher:
I am not coldly ignoring my 6 year-old who really is NOT sick today. She just wants me or my husband to come home from work. Even the school nurse says she is fine, but when you refuse to re-admit her to your classroom; that means that one of us has to give up a sick day and come home anyway. Which makes it much less likely that one of us will have a sick day available when something is actually...

Dear Rick Riordan,
Because your books have given my children and I another great source of bedtime reading material, I will forgive you for the cliffhanger ending of The Lost Hero. So, is there a more specific release date for The Son of Neptune than Fall 2011? Because really, we’re dying here. I guess it’s time to start The Hobbit and hope it takes us a long time to get through it. At least I know how...

Six Years Ago
My husband and I were looking for land to buy and build on. Our house was paid off, the real estate bubble hadn’t burst yet, and we knew it was now or never. Instead of land, we found a house in the country. It had its flaws (mostly in the form of awful 80’s decor), but it came with just enough house and land for our then family of six. We found this house before we had even listed...

The Good News?
Thanks to last night’s ice storm, work and school are cancelled today. The bad news? I got up extra early to ascertain this and now I’m wide awake. At least the kids are still sleeping.

This Ought to be Entertaining
My 10 year-old son just volunteered to help me out by letting his 18 month-old sister hang out with him in his room. Of my five children, he is the neatest and the most particular about people mishandling his stuff. I give it 5 minutes before he can’t take it anymore.

Deep Breaths In
So, my boss just informed my co-worker and I that she is resigning effective three weeks from today. There are three of us on this staff and she was our Executive Director. No matter what, this will be a big change and I don’t do those well. I’m feeling a little terrified right now.

Beware the Man Cold!
Somehow my 17 month-old caught a cold which is odd because none of the other four kids brought one home from school and she spends her days with my mom who hasn’t been sick either. I’ve been curious as to who would get this cold next: The middle-schooler who is taking the SAT for the Duke enrichment camps this summer? My son who would use an even lesser excuse than a cold to beg to...

Confession
On slow, chilly mornings like this I have been known to put in a movie that I don’t necessarily love or switch the TV to some annoying cartoon beloved by my kids simply because I know that within 5 minutes or so, all of them will be piled on and around me to watch it. And that makes it all worth it. (I just found the Percy Jackson movie-such a travesty if you’ve read the books, but the...

About Those People Skills
One of my 11 in 2011 goals was to work on my people skills. I can be shy and introverted and I am incredibly socially awkward for someone who has had my life experiences. (A one-time college sorority girl and bilingual former missionary should be better at small talk than I am.) While I was not wrong to make this a goal, it was inspired by a couple of run-ins I’ve had at the museum since I...

Not That You Asked
Several weeks ago, Toni was nice enough to suggest you all follow me and, to my great surprise, several of you have. So you would have some clue who I was, I was going to participate in one of those ‘30 days to get to know me’ memes. But I know myself well enough to know I would do that for about a week before I lost interest. Instead, I think I’m going to post my 30 things about...

Dear Daughter,
I’m sorry. I really had forgotten that I was wearing a crazy Kermit the Frog stocking cap when I got out of the car and summoned you to get in it “right now.” But, considering the fact that I had been sitting there for 5 minutes watching you talk to your friends while your 18 month-old sister howled in protest because the car was no longer moving; I think you had it coming. ...

On a Related Note
I just realized that it’s been about 20 years since I’ve had to stand on the front porch and promise that “I’m taking these shoes off as soon as we start dancing” any time I wore something with a heel higher than a ballet flat. (Although taking those shoes off to dance probably did my feet quite a few favors back then.)

Today's Behind-the-Wheel Epiphany
I often get great ideas while driving. I often forget them as soon as I get home. But today’s burst of realization is worth remembering, so I’m writing it down (instead of loading the dishwasher) before I forget: My inner 20 year-old is overly attached and sentimental about everything and everyone who was significant in her life at the time. While that inner 20 year-old should...

As Seen on TV?
My girlfriends and I got together for a very nice Sunday brunch today just like those women on Sex and the City. As much as we loved it, when we looked at our calendars we determined that it will likely be about 6 weeks before our schedules will permit another one. We wondered how the Sex and the City girls managed to do it weekly and decided it must have been because that was just a TV show. I...
