Shonda Rhimes=My Therapist?
For many seasons now, Grey’s Anatomy has spoken to me like few other mainstream tv shows. This is primarily because the show’s namesake Meredith Grey has mother issues that are not dissimilar from my own. I’ve often found myself watching this show and sobbing out of familiarity with something Meredith says, feels, or does. But last week’s episode helped me make sense of...

Never Enough Time
In addition to the 5 kids and museum job, I’m also the leader of a youth group for teenaged girls. Our annual convention is coming up Memorial Day weekend and we recently had a huge fundraiser selling cinnamon rolls from a fairly famous bakery in Okarche, OK. (Which is also the home of Eischen’s as seen on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives-According to my mom, it’s a...

Sometimes People Piss Me Off
And I post about it on Facebook (and copy and paste it to Tumblr): “I really try not to use FB as a bully pulpit, but tonight I can’t help myself: As often happens with severe weather, my cell phone service was erratic until I left Norman city limits at around 6:00 p.m. At that point my phone exploded. Based on the texts I missed, people either a) don’t know I live in Norman or...

Overheard in my bathroom/makeshift tornado shelter
“I knew I should have gone to Chicago!”  We are fine. But there is nothing that will start your heart more than the news helicopters flying over your house while your storm radio goes off and your FB wall blows up with “Tornado on the ground! Seek shelter now!” And nothing more terrifying than knowing 4 of your 5 kids are still at school with your husband en route to pick...

Happiness...
is sometimes a short email blurb from an old friend. I know it was for me today.

FYI
I reread this morning’s novella post in horror. Typos much? Then, I edited it here and copied and pasted it to my personal blog too. Which means now my nieces and in-laws all know that I lived with my high school boyfriend and never married him AND that their son/brother/step-son/uncle would have done ANYTHING to get me out of that situation. And I’m OK with that.

Rather than edit again
I should clarify that my daughter and her friends were catching the hint that I wanted them to go lock themselves in the car, they just didn’t want to leave me there alone with the “creepy dude.” Darn kids! :)

How I'm Not Like My Mother Pt. 214
My freshman year in college finally provided me with the backbone I needed to dump my abusive, possessive, and very controlling high school boyfriend and move out of the duplex we shared and into the empty dorm room I had paid for. Once I finally got out from under his thumb, I had to teach myself how to function without him: I couldn’t drive, I was terrified to be alone, I even needed his help to...

Nice Perspective to End the Evening
As you may have gathered from my posts, my kids and I are Harry Potter fans. Recently, we started listening to the very first book on CD again. (The last time we owned it, it was on cassette tape.) Because I used to teach, I can’t help but hit ‘pause’ each time I hear something worth discussing. I enjoy these conversations with my kids, AND I really needed some distractions after...

Another Family Ritual Observed

At least I'm not wearing jeggings?
When I was in middle school, I was obsessed with all things Star Wars. After seeing Return of the Jedi, my friends and I spent the rest of the summer as well as most of the following school year writing out stories about the characters and what we think happened next. (It was 1983-1984, yes I am knocking on the door of the big 4-0 in less than a month.) Thanks to the Internet, what would later be...
